"Re-Contextualization" is the 100 minute long split cassette shared by Tinty
Music and :YAU:. Each artist swapped various sound sources, composed original
music based on those sounds and sent the track back the source artists for
finishing touches. The end result is five different tracks composed over a ten
month period ranging from twelve to twenty-three minutes in length. For the
most part, each track is an exercise in minimalism. The only way to truly do
this cassette justice is to listen through a pair of studio quality head phones
on a professional grade deck. This alleviates all of the snaps, pops and hiss
evident even on this high quality Maxwell XLS II tape. Tinty Music's tracks
seem to focus more on washed atmospheres with various clicks, tones and whines
delegated to a more subservient role. :YAU:'s caustic rhythms, percussion, and
feedback playing a prominent role over the thin ambience, is just the opposite.
As with other :YAU: sample source trading cassettes, this release brings out
the strengths of both participating artists leaving me craving more.
Tinty Music is: Kevin J. O'Conner, :YAU: is Randy H. Yau
