Apart from the inevitable Depeche Mode comparisons, Soil & Eclipse are a
refreshing new addition to the male Ethereal Gothic genre. "Necromancy" is the
Hawaiian trio's debut album and it shows an unusual degree of maturity for such
a young act. All of the instrumentation and vocal work are flawlessly produced
and executed. Musically the album ranges from several upbeat tunes suitable for
club play to an equivalent number of melancholy pieces just perfect for radio.
The album consists of entirely electronic arrangement without a single guitar,
although a bass is utilized on several tracks. Most of the electronic
instrumentation are textured keyboard patches with a minimal amount of
sequenced percussion. This is definitely music that lends itself to being
played almost totally live. In conclusion, both Goth and Darkwave freaks will
definitely enjoy this album as well as fans of Synth-pop and dark ambient vocal
composition.
