While definitely the shortest to date, this new Scorn album, oddly named after
a type of fish, isn't something Mick Harris fans will want to miss. Gone are
the sampled vocal arrangements and subdued tones of "Logghi Barogghi" and
instead Mick has decided to returned to a more dub type of sound similar in
many respects to "Gyral". A few of the tracks remain ultra minimalistic as if
paying some respects to the pain endured by Mick when he was on Earache
Records. The remainder of the tracks play around with some of the most unique
sounds that have appeared on a Scorn record to date, with the traditional 4/4 or
3/4 kick drum beat percolating around in the background. The only things that I
miss on this record are some of the stronger ambient dub pieces that Mick used
to compose in the past. Instead he has chosen to move on to a new sound and has
incorporated many fundamental elements popular in the thriving drum and bass
movement in England. "Zander" while definitely not Scorn's strongest record,
exhibits a positive musical transition that can only lead to good
things in the future.
