Prologue: THE FUTURE
In June of 1977, Adi Newton, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, formed a group
called The Dead Daughters, to perform at a private party held in bar in the
University of Sheffield for one performance only. Their next incarnation was
the legendary and mythological Studs. The group which consisted of Adi Newton,
Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh (The Future), Glen Gregory (Heaven 17), Richard H
Kirk, Stephen Mallinder, Christopher Watson ( Caberet Voltaire ), and Hayden
Boyes eston (2.3). The Studs played one chaotic and anarchic performance the
set included versions of the "Dr Who Theme", "Louie Louie", "Viscious", "Cock
in My Pocket" and "The Drones Want to Come on Now". A recording was made of
this legendary recording and rumours of its release are circulating.
For a short period prior to forming ClockDVA Adi Newton was one of the three
members of the Future who later went on to form The Human League and later as
Heaven 17 a name taken from the Music Chart listing in the Film A Clockwork
Orange. The Future's music explored the boundaries of experimental electronics
which was fueled by their mutual infatuation with futurisism in alls its varied
forms. The band produced a number of recordings including versions of "Almost
Medieval", "Blank Clocks", "Dancevision", "Looking for the Black Haired Girls"
and "Future Religion".
Shortly after there formation Adi Newton departed due to a conflict in ideas
the Future was based purely on Electronic music no Acoustics, Newton felt
restrictions placed by this doctrine would limit possibilities he wanted to
explore and so they where divided Newton was replaced by Philip Oakey and the
future ended as quickly as it had begun they changed their name to The Human
League and released "Being Boiled" the rest is history. Unfortunatley the Human
Leagues intresting beginings did not continue after the departure of Martyn
Ware and Ian Craig Marsh.
In 1981, BEF / Virgin Records were to release an album of the Future Recordings
entitled THE FUTURE TAPES (Virgin Records OVED 4 [LP][UK]1981) but this project
has remained unreleased due to legal problems between Heaven 17 /BEF & Philip
Oakey (Human League ). Future tracks can still be found on various bootlegs
like Human League's IN DARKNESS (1978-DARK DAWN).
Shortly after his departure from The Future, Adi Newton teamed up with his
friend Stephen "Judd" James Turner and formed ClockDVA. They devised the name
ClockDVA partialy from the Nadsat Language contained in the glossary of the
novel A CLOCKWORK ORANGE by Anthony Burgess. DVA means "2" in Russian, the
further numerological and cabalistic references can be found within the sleeve
notes contained on the Buried Dreams Album a fuller in depth analysis will be
publish in the ClockDVA archive CD. The Clock element was adopted as a symbol
of Surrealism and the mechanics of Time.
ClockDVA recruited two additional members David James Hammond for Guitar and
Treatments and Simon Mark Elliot Kemp for Electronics/Synthesizer. The earlist
recordings made where by Newton / Turner these form the basis of "6 Theraputic
Tape Loops "a project devised by Newton / Turner to act as audio therapy a form
of ambient music the project will be released on Anterior Research special
projects series in the Near Future.

ClockDVA release their first official album WHITE SOULS IN BLACK SUITS via
an invitation from Throbbing Gristle to be released on their Industrial Records
label as a cassette release only. The album itself is a raw pre-amble prior to
the Formation of Thirst. Taken from fifteen hours of improvisational sessions a
five member version of DVA recorded the sessions via a mobile recording
unit. The album was mixed and produced at Caberet Voltaires Western Works
studio. The album includes a tape chance montage sequence in collaboration with
Chris Watson. Richard H Kirk and Stephen Mallider engineered and co-produced
in collaboration with DVA.

DVA achieves its first recording contract with Independent underground
label, Fetish Records and released the seminal album THIRST and the single "4
Hours" both produced by Ken Thomas. It was received with unilateral critical
acclaim and projected Clockdva into a position as one of the cutting edge
groups to emerge from the Industrial New Wave movement. Among the many
outstanding reviews the one by Paul Morley in the NME stands out. "'Thirst' is
the first brilliant LP of 1981 and one of the great records of the '80s".

1981 - 2nd - DIVIDED FOR THE SAKE OF UNION
CLOCKDVA Began work on new material compositions shortly after Thirst such
as, "Remain Remain", "The Opening", "Felt", "Don't listen to Mother", the only
versions of which where recorded live and partially appear on the Fetish
Album. The last testiment was after a number of criticaly acclaimed
performances and intense media interest that Adi Newton and co founder
Steven James "JUDD" Turner decided to re-form the group dismissing Collins
Quail / Widger in the process and concentrating on a more accessable front
in order to widen the appeal of ClockDVA and extend its possible arena
beyond the industrial / Independant scene. They recruited Paul Browse on
Alto Saxaphone and John Valatine Carruthers on guitars. Later that year,
tragedy struck with the death of co-founder Stephen James Turner. The
re-released versions of the WHITE SOULS album along with the PASSIONS STILL
AFLAME e.p. are dedicated to the memory of "Judd" Turner. A later song,
"The Voice That Speaks From Within", contains references concerning the
circumstances of his death. ADVANTAGE the album that followed contains
numerous references and in particular the track Beautiful Losers is realy
dedicated to him and the others who have tragicly died such as Montgomery
Clift, Paulo Passolini Jaques Vache, and so on.
1982 - The Cool Trane
After the tragic loss of co-founder JUD S. J .Turner, Adi Newton forms a
six piece format of ClockDVA and signs a major recording contract with
Polydor Records. Newton also adds more horns to the project including
Micheal Ward on flute and sax and himself on trumpet. With the new horns,
their sound becomes a kind of avant garde jazz funk New wave electro fusion
it also contains the seed of the DVA element which brings a uniqueness to
the productions.

1983 - Eternity in Paris
Adi Newton travels to Paris to meet Hugh Jones to act as Producer on the
new album production ADVANTAGE recorded over a period of time and in
numerous studios most noteably at SARM Studios in London where final mix
production masters where recorded. The production values stand bold in
comparison with previous releases and the material contains a dark
atmosphere, at the centre of the works the DVA element is in place.DVA also
finish work on an outstanding video for the single entitled "Resistance" in
cooperation with Peter Anderson and Peter Care, the later being the writer
and director of the avant epic JOHNNY YES NO. It was shortly after the
recording of the titles "City of Night", "Sister", "Someday" and "Sequential"
at John Foxx's studio The Garden and the John Peel session that DVA began a
major European Tour.

1983 - Dark Night of the Soul
During the European tour and after the Bains Douche performance in Paris
where the whole ADVANTAGE project began it abruptly ended, having appeared
briefly in the Rolling Stones video "Under the cover of Night" that was
being Filmed at the Bains Douche on that day. Newton left that night for
Amsterdam after the DVA show to collobarate with an American
physicist. During this period in Holland 1984-87 Adi formulates : The Anti
Group Communications Project T.A.G.C. Details on TAGC can be found at the
ARComm(TM) WWW Site which is in preparation.
1988 - NEU AEGIS
ClockDVA triumphantly returns to the music world with a totally new electronic
sound void of traditional instruments. The band line up now consists of three
members of the Advantage era line up: Paul Browse, Dean Dennis, and Adi Newton.
Likened to Kraftwerk's darker half, the band promotes a cyberpunk "man +
machine" philosophy. "ClockDVA have picked up where Kraftwerk left off"

1990 - Don't Sell Your Dreams
DVA releases their first new album in seven years BURIED DREAMS. Also that
same year, a live album entitled TRANSITIONAL VOICES was released and Robert
E. Baker became a fully fledged member of Clock DVA . This recording caused
unresolvable differences between Adi and the issuing record label,
Interfisch Records in Germany. Adi cancelled the contract with Interfisch and
severed all connections. This dispute effected U.S. record label Wax Trax
records who where to be re-releasing the ClockDVA back catalog via a
licensing agreement through Interfisch. All Wax Trax released in the end was
the album BURIED DREAMS and a number of singles, and a catalog number for
the 'un-re-issued' ADVANTAGE album. Soon after that, the band signed with
Contempo Records in Italy. A company very interested in promoting and
contributing to the advancement of ClockDVA.
