Stiff Miners have been billed as the first Russia. industrial act or the first electronic band with a record contract from the former Soviet Union at any rate. The sticker slapped on the front of the jewel case heralds that their music has much in common with Laibach, Test Dept and Einstruzende Neubauten. I can't see the comparison to the last two at all as the Stiff Miner's music lacks any grinding metallic sounds or stalwart drum beats that are ritually associated with those two bands. However the comparison to Laibach is spot on target. The vocals are laced with the staunch east European accent and the pulsing electronic rhythms remind me heavily of the Slovenian marches that Laibach were so found of writing. Yet their music seems to be much more concise and to the point than anything Laibach has ever released. The music is intriguing enough to warrant another inquisitive look towards the burgeoning talent that the dysfunctional former Soviet states have to offer. Perhaps we'll find another electronic musical revolution derived in part by the lifelong stifling of ideas on the part of their former governments.

Stiff Miners are:
Dmitry Bablevsky - vocals & programming
Sergey Lifvinoff - sampling & programming
Paul Russanoff - keyboards
